Savannah and the Soldier is essentially a love story-with explicit passages where appropriate. Its setting is Cyprus, a Mediterranean island on which legend has it that the goddess Aphrodite will give love to all who seek it. There is also adventure. The book traces the development of an increasingly strong bond between a young woman and an older man, and the effect that this has on their marriages. Concurrently, it gives the flavor of expatriate life in Cyprus, idyllic for some, but harmful for others. It also includes the activities of a dealer in smuggled artifacts from Afghanistan, an attack on Savannah by her husband that dislocates her back and leaves her crippled, her husband's death in a car crash, and a killing in self-defense by a terrified woman.
