Her leg paralyzed from a skiing accident, Racine moves with her family from sunny Los Angeles to Northern Ohio, with grey winter days, during her senior year of high school. Mike notices Racine, thinks that she is cute, and is amazed by the way that she glides along on her crutches. Mike has always had a secret admiration for females in casts or on crutches. They meet by chance and agree to date. A relationship with one confined to crutches is different. They dance at their prom, Racine still on crutches, a stiletto heel sandal on her good foot. Mike needed no prodding to accompany Racine when shopping for her prom shoe. Over one teacher's objection, Racine insists on processing into the auditorium for commencement. Later, Mike is away in the Navy and Racine is in a traffic accident, with a possibility of losing that same leg.
