Arrowhead Lake is a story of the courage to love in an environment of political suspense. Upon graduation from college, Susan Riley of Arrowhead Lake, Wisconsin, is hired for the summer to the be the live-in tutor and companion for Molly Marshall, the fifteen-year-old daughter of the President of the United States. Soon, Susan meets Mark Marshall, the son of the President. Susan has no expectations of a romantic relationship with Mark. She realizes the barriers are too great, so she keeps telling herself, "Summer romances never last." Nevertheless, the attraction is real, but powerful political forces keep them apart. Mark Marshall has political obligations, including a phony engagement to a supermodel, Cynthia. At the end of the summer, convinced her relationship with Mark is over, Susan moves to Madison, Wisconsin, to teach third grade. Within weeks, Mark arrives at the school where he delivers an impromptu speech on courage to an assembly of students and staff. Mark and Susan realize their relationship will flourish only if they have the courage to love.
