When Bob Bannister arrives in Prairie City, he appears to be a gambler -- he certainly wins at stud poker. In a confrontation between Howard Marble and a gunman, Bannister saves the young man's life. Then he helps Howard pay off his gambling debts to Sydney Cromer, president of the Marble Dome land and irrigation project, earning Cromer's enmity. Meanwhile, the sheriff has noted Bannister's resemblance to a Reward dodger for The Maverick.
