Yukio Mishima, born Kimitake Hiraoka, was a major 20th-century Japanese novelist, playwright, essayist, and political activist known for works such as Confessions of a Mask and The Sea of Fertility. He was born in Tokyo, became internationally famous for his complex fiction and strong traditionalist views, and died by seppuku in 1970 after a failed attempt to incite a military uprising.[1][3][6]
