William V. P. Newlin
William V. P. Newlin (1933-2024) was a former U.S. Foreign Service officer who served in Paris, Guatemala, and the Office of German Affairs, authoring a popular guidebook 'The Lakes and Ponds of Mount Desert' (1989, revised 2013) and a memoir 'Drunk at the State Department' (2019) about his sobriety journey. A Harvard graduate with degrees from Harvard Business School and the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, he began his 25-year diplomatic career in 1961 after Army service. He died peacefully at his home in Northwest Washington, D.C., on December 11, 2024, at age 91.
