William T Sherman

William Tecumseh Sherman was a prominent Union general during the American Civil War, best known for his 1864 'March to the Sea' through Georgia and the Carolinas, which implemented revolutionary tactics of 'total warfare' to undermine the Confederacy. After the war, he served as Commanding General of the U.S. Army from 1869 to 1883, overseeing military campaigns in the Indian Wars, and later published his memoirs in 1875. He died on February 14, 1891, in New York City.
