William Steig
William Steig was an American cartoonist, illustrator, and children's book author, renowned for his long career at The New Yorker where he contributed over 1,600 cartoons and 123 covers, earning the title 'King of Cartoons.' Born to Eastern European Jewish immigrants in Brooklyn, he began publishing children's books at age 61, creating classics like Shrek!, Sylvester and the Magic Pebble (Caldecott winner), Abel's Island, and Doctor De Soto (Newbery winner). He died in 2003 at age 95.
