William McClure Thomson
William McClure Thomson (1806-1894) was an American missionary and author best known for his influential book *The Land and the Book*, first published in 1859, which provided detailed illustrations of the manners, customs, scenes, and scenery of the Holy Land.[1][2][4] Born in Springdale, Ohio, he graduated from Miami University and Princeton Theological Seminary, then served as a missionary in Syria from 1832 to 1878 under the American Board of Foreign Missions.[2][4] After retiring, he revised his seminal work and became a renowned authority on Bible lands and related languages.[1][4]
