William Greenleaf 1811-1887 Eliot

William Greenleaf Eliot (1811–1887) was an American Unitarian minister, educator, and civic leader who founded the first Unitarian church west of the Mississippi in St. Louis and co-founded Washington University, serving as its chancellor from 1870 to 1887.[1][2] He contributed to numerous institutions including the public school system, Saint Louis Art Museum, and Western Sanitary Commission during the Civil War.[1][4] Born into a prominent New England family, he was the grandfather of poet T. S. Eliot and championed education and social reforms, though his stance on slavery was complex, favoring gradual emancipation over immediate abolition.[1][7]
