Ulysses S. (Ulysses Simpson) Grant

Ulysses S. Grant (born Hiram Ulysses Grant) was a U.S. Army general who commanded the Union forces to victory in the American Civil War, notably at Vicksburg and Appomattox, earning him national heroism. He served as the 18th President of the United States from 1869 to 1877, where he supported Reconstruction, fought the Ku Klux Klan, and established the Department of Justice. Despite facing corruption scandals in his administration, Grant remained personally untainted and later wrote acclaimed memoirs before his death from throat cancer.
