Thomas Bangs 1815-1878 Thorpe

Thomas Bangs Thorpe (1815–1878) was an American humorist, painter, illustrator, and author best known for the frontier story "The Big Bear of Arkansas". Born in Massachusetts, he later worked in Louisiana and New York, writing sketches and fiction that depicted Southern and frontier life.[1][2][4]
