Theo van Leeuwen

Theo van Leeuwen is a Dutch-Australian linguist and social semiotician widely recognized as a co-founder, alongside Gunther Kress, of multimodality—a field studying meaning-making through diverse semiotic resources including language, visual design, and media. He is also a prominent critical discourse theorist and analyst, known for his influential work on multimodality and his editorship of journals such as Visual Communication and Social Semiotics. Van Leeuwen holds emeritus and honorary professorships at several universities, including the University of Technology, Sydney, and the University of Southern Denmark.
