T. (Tobias) Smollett

Tobias George Smollett (bapt. 19 March 1721 – 17 September 1771) was a Scottish writer, surgeon, and satirist best known for his picaresque novels including The Adventures of Roderick Random (1748), The Adventures of Peregrine Pickle (1751), and The Expedition of Humphry Clinker (1771). He trained as a physician, served as a naval surgeon, and also worked as a translator, historian, critic, and editor. His works influenced later British novelists such as Charles Dickens.[1][2]
