Susan Patron
Susan Patron (1948–2023) was an acclaimed American author of children's books, best known for winning the 2007 Newbery Medal for *The Higher Power of Lucky*, the first in her Lucky's Hard Pan Trilogy. She worked for 35 years as a children's librarian at the Los Angeles Public Library, retiring in 2007, and drew inspiration from her eavesdropping and storytelling skills developed in her youth. Married for 54 years to rare book restorer Rene Albert Patron, she passed away on October 24, 2023, after battling lung cancer.
