Sophie Mereau
Sophie Friederike Mereau (née Schubart), a prominent German Romantic poet, novelist, and translator, was born in Altenburg and received an exceptional education for her time, studying under Johann Gottlieb Fichte and associating with figures like Schiller and the Schlegel circle.[1][3][4] She married law professor Friedrich Ernst Carl Mereau in 1793, with whom she had two children, divorcing in 1801 before wedding poet Clemens Brentano in 1803 or 1804.[1][2][3] A key figure in Jena's Romantic scene, she edited almanacs and the magazine Kalathiskos, but died tragically at age 36 in childbirth with a stillborn child.[1][4][5]
