Richard N. Ellis
Richard N. Ellis (1939-2025) was a distinguished historian and professor of Southwest Studies at Fort Lewis College from 1987-2005, and Director of the Center of Southwest Studies from 1987-1995. He previously taught history at the University of New Mexico from 1968-1987 and earned his PhD from the University of Colorado in 1967. Ellis was a prolific scholar who authored numerous books on American Southwest history, including works on Native American history such as 'My People the Sioux' and 'Cheyenne Dog Soldiers: A Ledgerbook History of Coups and Combat.'
