Richard Evelyn Byrd Jr. (1888–1957) was an American naval officer, pioneering aviator, and polar explorer renowned for leading expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctic, including claimed flights over the North Pole in 1926 and the first confirmed flight over the South Pole in 1929.[1][2][5]
