Ralph E Griswold

Ralph E. Griswold was a pioneering computer scientist renowned for developing high-level programming languages such as SNOBOL for string processing and Icon for symbolic computation. He earned his PhD in electrical engineering from Stanford University in 1962, worked at Bell Telephone Laboratories where he advanced to head of Programming Research and Development, and in 1971 founded and led the Computer Science Department at the University of Arizona until 1981, later becoming Regents Professor. After retiring in 1995, he pursued interests in weaving, creating a digitized archive of weaving resources.
