R H Major

Richard Henry Major (1818–1891) was a British geographer, historian, and librarian who served as superintendent of maps and charts at the British Museum from 1844 and later as keeper of the department of printed maps and plans from 1867 until his retirement in 1880.[2][5] He was honorary secretary of the Hakluyt Society from 1849 to 1858, editing key travel accounts, and held leadership roles in the Royal Geographical Society, including honorary secretary from 1861 to 1881 and vice-president from 1881 to 1884.[2][4] Major authored significant works on exploration history, such as 'The Life of Prince Henry of Portugal, surnamed the Navigator' (1868) and editions for the Hakluyt Society.[2][5]
