Pope John Paul II
Pope John Paul II, born Karol Józef Wojtyła, was the head of the Catholic Church and sovereign of Vatican City from 1978 until his death in 2005. Born in Poland, he was the first non-Italian pope in more than four centuries and became one of the most influential religious leaders of the 20th century.
