Phyllis Root
Phyllis Root is an award-winning author of over fifty books for children, including picture books like *Big Momma Makes the World*, which won the Boston Globe Horn Book Award, and nature titles such as *Plant a Pocket of Prairie* and *One North Star*, both recipients of John Burroughs Riverby Awards.[1][2][4] She began writing for children in 1979 after discovering picture books in college and persisting through rejections, with her first published story *Moon Tiger* appearing in *Cricket Magazine*.[3] Root has taught in MFA programs at Vermont College and Hamline University and authored a guide to Minnesota's native wildflowers.[1]
