Sir Robert Eric Mortimer Wheeler (1890–1976) was a prominent British archaeologist, army officer, and author who authored 24 books on archaeological subjects. He served as Director of the National Museum of Wales and London Museum, founded the Institute of Archaeology in London, and was Director-General of the Archaeological Survey of India, leading key excavations at sites like Maiden Castle, Harappa, and Verulamium. Wheeler pioneered systematic excavation methods, emphasizing 'controlled discovery,' and popularized archaeology through television and lectures.
