Milton Hildebrand
Milton Hildebrand was a professor emeritus of zoology at the University of California, Davis, renowned for his classic textbook 'Analysis of Vertebrate Structure,' which went through five editions and exemplified the anatomical approach to vertebrate morphology. A WWII veteran of the 10th Mountain Division, he served as an instructor in mountaineering, battalion pack master using mules for supply chains in the Italian Alps, and earned a Bronze Star for his role in liberating Italy by crossing the Po Valley in 1945. An avid outdoorsman, he managed the 1936 Olympic ski team, led Sierra Club pack trips, and served as its president from 1937 to 1940.
