The Metropolitan Museum of Art, founded in 1870 by a group of American businessmen, financiers, artists, and thinkers, originated from a 1866 meeting in Paris to establish a national art institution. Incorporated on April 13, 1870, it opened to the public in New York City's Dodworth Building and later moved to Central Park, growing into one of the world's foremost art museums with sites at The Met Fifth Avenue and The Met Cloisters.
