Maurice Sendak
Maurice Sendak (1928-2012) was an acclaimed American author and illustrator of children's books, best known for his masterpiece *Where the Wild Things Are* (1963), which earned him the 1964 Caldecott Medal. Born in Brooklyn, New York, to Polish-Jewish immigrant parents, he illustrated over 100 books, wrote and illustrated more than 50 of his own, and received numerous honors including the Hans Christian Andersen Award and the National Medal of Arts. A self-taught artist influenced by his childhood experiences, Sendak also worked in theater, designing sets and costumes for productions like *Really Rosie* and operas.[1][2][3][4]
