Manuel Duran
Manuel Duran was a prominent Spanish literary scholar and poet, born in Barcelona, who fled fascist Spain in 1939 with his family, living in France and Mexico before earning degrees there and a doctorate from Princeton in 1953. He joined Yale University's faculty in 1960 after teaching at Smith College, becoming an authority on Spanish Golden Age writers like Cervantes and Quevedo, as well as 20th-century Spanish literature; he authored or coauthored 40 books, over 150 articles, and five volumes of poetry. In 1981, he received Spain's Cross of the Order of Queen Isabella for his scholarly achievements and promotion of Spanish culture.
