Nelson Mandela was a South African anti-apartheid activist, statesman, and author best known for his autobiography Long Walk to Freedom. He became South Africa’s first Black president in 1994 after spending 27 years in prison for his political activism, and he shared the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize for helping guide the country from apartheid to democracy.
