Makoto Ueda

Makoto Ueda was a renowned professor emeritus of Japanese literature at Stanford University and a distinguished scholar, translator, critic, and biographer of Japanese poetry, particularly known for his work on haiku, senryu, and tanka. He authored fifteen books on Japanese poetry, two of which were written in Japanese, and provided English readers with some of the finest resources on Japanese poetics. Ueda passed away on August 19, 2020, at the age of 89, following complications from a fall.
