Louis Arnold Morris

Louis Arnold Morris, known professionally as Morris Louis, was an American painter born Morris Berstein in Baltimore, Maryland on November 24, 1912, who became a leading figure in Color Field painting. He died of lung cancer in Washington, D.C. on September 7, 1962, at the height of his artistic powers, having pioneered the transition from Abstract Expressionism to Colour Stain Painting. His mature style featured layered veils and rivulets of poured acrylic paint on untreated canvases, creating iconic works of Color Field art.
