Karel Čapek

Karel Čapek (1890–1938) was a renowned Czech writer, playwright, journalist, and philosopher, best known for introducing the word 'robot' in his science fiction play R.U.R. (Rossum's Universal Robots, 1920) and for works like War with the Newts. Born in Bohemia to a country doctor, he suffered from a lifelong spinal disease and studied philosophy in Prague, Berlin, and Paris before settling in Prague as a writer and journalist. His literary output, often created with his brother Josef, explored philosophical themes, human nature, and social issues, while he actively opposed fascism and communism.
