Josiah Dwight Whitney

Josiah Dwight Whitney was a prominent American geologist and professor at Harvard University who served as the chief of the California Geological Survey from 1860 to 1874. He became the foremost authority on the economic geology of the United States through his extensive studies of mining regions, and notable landmarks such as Mount Whitney and the Whitney Glacier were named in his honor.
