Joseph Viktor von Scheffel
Joseph Victor von Scheffel (1826-1886) was a German poet and novelist who became one of the most widely read authors of the 19th century. He achieved immense popularity with his comic epic poem 'Der Trompeter von Säckingen' (1854) and historical novel 'Ekkehard' (1855), which appealed to sentimental popular taste. He was also known for his contributions to German student culture, particularly his collection of drinking songs 'Gaudeamus!' (1868).
