Joseph Schacht

Joseph Franz Schacht (1902–1969) was a British-German scholar of Arabic and Islamic studies who taught at Columbia University in New York. He was a leading Western authority on Islamic law and hadith studies, best known for works such as *The Origins of Muhammadan Jurisprudence* and *An Introduction to Islamic Law*.
