John Ogilby

John Ogilby (1600–1676) was a Scottish translator, impresario, publisher, and pioneering cartographer known for his translations of Virgil, Homer, and Aesop's Fables, as well as establishing Ireland's first theatre in Dublin.[1][3] He produced the landmark road atlas Britannia in 1675, the first national road atlas in Western Europe on a uniform scale, following a varied career marked by theatre management, poetry, and surveying after the Great Fire of London.[2][4] Despite facing misfortunes like the Irish Rebellion, shipwreck, fire, and plague, he became 'king’s cosmographer and geographical printer.'[4][5]
