John M. Drake

John M. Drake was a Union Army officer who served in the 1st Oregon Cavalry and 1st Oregon Infantry during the American Civil War, eventually rising to the rank of lieutenant colonel. Later, he worked as a purchasing agent for the Oregon Railway and Navigation Company and is credited with discovering the fossil beds now protected at the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument.
