John Lewis Burckhardt

John Lewis Burckhardt (1784-1817) was a Swiss explorer and scholar born into a wealthy family in Lausanne, Switzerland. He studied at universities including Leipzig and Göttingen, then moved to England where he joined the African Association, learning Arabic and adopting Arab customs to explore the Middle East. Famous for rediscovering the ancient city of Petra in 1812, he traveled extensively through Syria, Palestine, Nubia, and Abyssinia before dying of dysentery in Cairo.
