John Kauffmann
John M. Kauffmann, born in Champaign, Illinois, was a conservationist, journalist, and author who graduated from Princeton University in 1945 and served as a diplomatic courier during World War II. He wrote for the Washington Star and National Geographic before joining the National Park Service, where he played a key role in establishing Alaska's Gates of the Arctic National Park and contributed to the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act. His books include 'Flow East: A Look at our North Atlantic Rivers' (1973) and 'Alaska’s Brooks Range: the Ultimate Mountains' (1992).
