Jim Cummins

James Cummins, born in Dublin, Ireland, is a renowned professor emeritus at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto, specializing in language development, bilingual education, and literacy for English language learners. He earned a B.A. in Psychology from the University of Dublin in 1970 and a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from the University of Alberta in 1974, and is famous for coining the terms BICS (Basic Interpersonal Communication Skills) and CALP (Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency) in 1979. Cummins has authored numerous books and articles on second language learning, advocating for language rights and minority languages, with his work translated into multiple languages.
