James Magnuson

James Magnuson (1941–2024) was an American novelist, playwright, and screenwriter who directed the Michener Center for Writers at the University of Texas at Austin for 23 years (1994–2017), mentoring generations of writers. Born in Madison, Wisconsin, he published his debut novel Without Barbarians in 1974 and went on to write ten novels, including Famous Writers I Have Known and Young Claus (2023), alongside numerous plays produced nationwide. His archive resides at UT's Harry Ransom Center, cementing his legacy in American letters.
