James A. Michener was an American writer known for sweeping, research-driven novels that traced the histories of places and peoples across generations. His breakthrough work, *Tales of the South Pacific*, won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, and he went on to publish more than 40 books.[1][10][13]
