Jacob Burckhardt
Jacob Burckhardt was a Swiss historian of art and culture, renowned for his seminal work *The Civilization of the Renaissance in Italy* (1860), which pioneered the study of cultural history by analyzing Renaissance daily life, politics, and thought.[1][2][5] Born into an aristocratic family in Basel, he studied theology before shifting to history under Leopold von Ranke, earning his Ph.D. from the University of Basel in 1843 and teaching there for much of his career.[1][3][7] Despite reluctance toward political history, his influential books like *Der Cicerone* (1855) shaped European views on art and civilization.[1][4]
