Ivan Turgenev (1818–1883) was a pioneering Russian novelist, poet, and playwright renowned for his mastery of literary realism and his critical depictions of serfdom and intergenerational conflict in 19th-century Russia. His major works include the short story collection 'A Sportsman's Sketches' and the novel 'Fathers and Sons,' which established him as the first Russian writer to gain widespread fame in Europe.
