Israel M. Gelfand I. M. Gelfand
Israel Moiseevich Gelfand was a prominent Soviet and American mathematician, regarded as one of the greatest mathematicians of the 20th century, who made fundamental contributions to group theory, representation theory, and functional analysis. He was also a biologist, teacher, and organizer of mathematical education, founding the Gelfand Outreach Program and serving as a professor at Moscow State University and Rutgers University.
