Institute of Medicine
The Institute of Medicine (IOM) was founded in 1970 under the congressional charter of the National Academy of Sciences to provide independent, evidence-based advice on health policy and medicine.[1][2][3] It operated as a nonprofit organization advancing health science through expert committees and reports until it was renamed the National Academy of Medicine in 2015.[1][5] The IOM addressed critical needs in U.S. healthcare amid debates over national health insurance in the 1960s.[2][3]
