Hymes

Dell Hathaway Hymes (1927–2009) was a pioneering American linguist, sociolinguist, anthropologist, and folklorist who founded the ethnography of communication and made significant contributions to linguistic anthropology. He is best known for his work on the relationship between language, culture, and society, as well as for editing the journal Language in Society. Hymes held professorships at Indiana University and the University of Virginia before retiring in 1998.
