Henry Steele Commager
Henry Steele Commager (1902-1998) was a prominent American historian, author, and public intellectual known for his works on American intellectual history and liberalism, including *The American Mind* and co-authoring *The Growth of the American Republic*. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he earned his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1928 and taught at New York University (1926-1938), Columbia University (1938-1956), and Amherst College (1956-1994), while actively engaging in political commentary and advocating for civil liberties.[1][2][3]
