Heinrich Barth
Johann Heinrich Barth (1821–1865) was a renowned German explorer of Africa and scholar, celebrated for his five-year expedition (1849–1855) across North and Central Africa, including Sudan, Chad, Niger, and Darfur, where he mapped unknown regions and documented local cultures, languages, and histories while disguised as a Muslim scholar.[2][1][5] He published his monumental five-volume account, *Travels and Discoveries in North and Central Africa* (1857–1858), which remains a key scholarly resource.[1][2] Later, he compiled Central African vocabularies and traveled in Asia Minor and Turkish Europe.[2]
