Graves Champney Haughton
Sir Graves Champney Haughton (1788–1849) was a British orientalist and scholar of Sanskrit and Bengali languages. Born in Dublin to a physician father, he joined the Bengal Army of the East India Company in 1808, excelling in Hindustani before becoming Professor of Sanskrit and Bengali at Haileybury College from 1819. He authored works on Hindu law including a translation of the Institutes of Manu, was elected FRS in 1821, and died of cholera in Saint-Cloud near Paris.
