Gioachino Greco

Gioachino Greco (c. 1600 – c. 1634), known as Il Calabrese, was an Italian chess player and writer considered the strongest player of his time and a pioneer in recording complete chess games. He authored influential manuscripts outlining chess rules, providing playing advice, and presenting instructive games for his patrons, which were later published widely after his death. Greco defeated top players in Rome, Paris, London, and Madrid before dying in the West Indies around 1634.
